Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo wants a pay rise
CRISTIANO RONALDO wants a guarantee he will earn one euro more than Lionel Messi from any new contract he signs.
Ronaldo is desperate to sign a new and improved contract at Real Madrid to fall in line with Messi and Neymar.
Messi’s most recent deal, penned in January, sees the Barcelona star earn a staggering €40m (£35m) a season.
That base rate greatly overshadows Ronaldo’s terms and the Portugal superstar is seeking to €9m-a-season (£7.8m) pay increase to match Messi’s earnings.
And Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have got wind of details of Ronaldo’s contract demands.
According to the report, the former Manchester United star is determined to remain the best-paid player in world football.
To do this, he has requested he earns at least one euro more than whatever Messi is paid.
Ronaldo is said to be unhappy that he is not the best-paid player in the world, despite winning the Ballon d’Or last year.
The 33-year-old has been named the world’ best footballer five times - the same as Messi - and is demanding to be recognised for that feat.
He was linked with a move away from Real Madrid last summer after the club failed, in his eyes, to adequately back him up in a tax case against the Spanish authorities.
There seems little chance of Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the Bernabeu this summer, what with the World Cup acting as a major distraction before pre-season starts up again.
Instead, Real could offload either Karim Benzema or Gareth Bale to make room for a new addition in the strike force.
