Morgan nets stoppage-time equaliser to salvage point for Scotland

Lewis Morgan spared Scotland’s blushes as the Under-21s came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw against Andorra in their European Championship qualifier.

The Celtic playmaker, who is currently on loan at St Mirren, scored in stoppage time after Jason Kerr had earlier given away a penalty on debut in Andorra la Vella.

It was a difficult match for Scot Gemmill’s youngsters, with the pitch at the Estadi Comunal in poor condition, resulting in a lack of quality on the ball for both sides.

Ricard Fernandez tested Ryan Fulton early on with a smart turn and shot but the Hamilton keeper got down well to stop at his near post.

After a slow start out on the left, Morgan began to drift infield to get on the ball more and went close just before the break as he curled a dipping effort narrowly over the top corner of the Andorra goal.

The hosts, who have yet to win a game in the group, gained confidence from going in level at the break with Fernandez causing problems inside the area, and it was he who was brought down by Kerr in the 77th minute following a long ball down the left side of the box.

Fernandez picked himself up off the grass to send Fulton the wrong way and leave Scotland heading to what looked like an embarrassing defeat.

However, Morgan popped up to net a last-gasp equaliser to level the tie.

The result does little for Gemmill’s side who are now three without a win following an impressive start to the group and move up to third in the table, though they have played a game more than second-placed Holland.
