The Sun says management wants Lampard to become part of their first team coaching staff with a view to him managing the club in the future.
Blues' chiefs are keen that whoever succeeds Antonio Conte will welcome Lampard as a coach and help groom him to become boss.
The 39-year-old has spent the past 18 months studying for his Uefa 'A' coaching licence and is keen to to get into management when the right opportunity arises.
Over the last year he has been working with Chelsea Under 18 manager and former team mate, Jodie Morris, coaching at the club's Cobham training ground.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is believed to have been impressed by reports about Lampard's progress and wants to make him a part of the club's future.
