Match summary

It was a tight first stanza though both teams had good chances to score through Joselu for Newcastle, and Alfie Mawson for Swansea.

After the interval, Tammy Abraham saw an effort cleared off the line as the Swans chased an opening goal. However, Lascelles later proved to be the hero with the winning strike for United.

It was an energetic but tight opening half an hour or so and the first real opening would only arrive when Federico Fernandez misjudged a long ball over the top, and headed the ball straight to Jacob Murphy.

Yet, the forward hit his first time volley over the bar in the 27th minute where he may have done better. Moments later Joselu also had a decent sight of goal but he fired just over from 25-yards.

It was the visitors creating the better of the opportunities and Joselu then came inches away from scoring the opener when his glancing header from Matt Ritchie’s cross was brilliantly saved past the post by Lukasz Fabianski.

However, just before the break, the Swans perhaps should have taken the lead when Tom Carroll’s brilliant delivery was met by Alfie Mawson who headed just wide when he should have scored.

After the break, there were more half chances for either outfit without anything materialising. In the 60th minute Tammy Abraham came close to opening his account when he got on the end of Leroy Fer’s through ball, rounded Rob Elliot but his effort on goal was cleared by Jamal Lascelles off the line.

United then hit back in the 73rd minute when Javier Manquillo sent Ayoze Perez clear, but the Spaniard fired his shot into the legs of Fabianski. Three minutes later Rafa Benitez’s men would hit the front as Lascelles rose well to head home from Ritchie’s superb cross.

Swansea struggled to threaten further in the remaining minutes although Wilfried Bony did send Luciano Narsingh clear deep into stoppage time, though his strike was palmed away by Elliot for a corner.
