Ex-Croatia striker Davor Suker has lauded Real Madrid's Luka Modric as the best midfielder in the world.
Suker, who made 86 appearances for Los Blancos and is now the President of the Croatian Football Federation, insists that Modric is the best central midfield player across the globe at this current time.
However he also believes it will be difficult for his compatriot to win the Ballon d'Or, as superstar forwards such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez are much more prevalent in the media.
Suker told AS (via Goal): "It is not easy because there is Cristiano, Messi, Neymar, Luis Suarez. But, of course, Modric in his position is the best. What I would wish for Luka, because I know that is what most excites him, is to win many trophies with his club, Real Madrid.
"He has personality and has earned respect with his football. He is an honest, humble and hardworking guy and this is what is valued in a club like Madrid."
Modric is immediately identifiable on the pitch due to his trademark long hair and emotive running style, but his set of skills also make him a unique and special player.
Despite being such a diminutive individual, the 31-year-old has great anticipation and is without doubt one of the most complete midfielders in world football, with his glossy footwork and superior vision.
Real have won all three of their La Liga games thus far, and can go three points ahead of Barcelona with a win over Espanyol on Sunday.
