Wigan Athletic vs Southend United - David Perkins returns for Latics as they close in on promotion

Posted Friday, April 22, 2016 by PA

David Perkins is back to bolster Wigan's midfield options for the visit of Southend.

Perkins, one of six Latics players named in the top 15 in the division by Sky Bet League One managers, was in the stands at Burton in midweek following his dismissal against Doncaster, which brought Latics' 20-game unbeaten run to an end.

Gary Caldwell made four changes on Tuesday night and Michael Jacobs, who scored his team's goal, is likely to retain his place having started for the first time since January following a calf problem.

Full-back Reece James (ankle) and Sanmi Odelusi (foot) are still sidelined.

Southend's David Mooney is close to a return after seven weeks out with an ankle injury.

The striker has resumed full training but manager Phil Brown will have to decide if he is ready for competitive action.

Myles Weston is also likely to come back. The midfielder has missed the Shrimpers' last two games with a calf problem but has recovered and could feature.

Michael Timlin and Noel Hunt, however, are both out with knee injuries.
