Las Palmas 1 - 1 Sporting de Gijon: Sporting Gijon hit back to snatch point at in-form Las Palmas

Sporting Gijon picked up a vital point in their bid to avoid relegation by coming from behind to draw 1-1 at in-form Las Palmas.

Pedro Bigas headed home after just three minutes to put Las Palmas in front, but Sporting winger Jony levelled in the 48th minute to halt Quique Setien's side's run of three consecutive league wins.

Las Palmas move on to 40 points and take another step towards securing survival, while Sporting remain in the relegation zone, but have an extra point to help their battle against the drop.

Setien's side went into the game on the back of wins over Real Sociedad, Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna and must have thought they were on their way to a fourth when Bigas ran forward undetected to head in Tana's free-kick.

Sporting coped well with the early setback and Luis Hernandez nearly got a quick equaliser, heading Jony's cross on to the bar.

Jonathan Viera missed two chances to double the hosts' advantage before the break in the space of a minute, and Sporting drew level at the start of the second half.

The Asturians broke quickly after conceding a corner and Jony took on defender Mauricio Lemos in the area before striking low past Javi Varas.

The goalscorer earned a yellow card just moments after scoring for an unsavoury stamp on Las Palmas captain David Garcia.

Sporting top-scorer Antonio Sanabria then missed a gilt-edged chance to grab a winner, blasting wide after being sent clear by a threaded pass by Alen Halilovic.
