Relegation-threatened Cowdenbeath secured a vital 1-0 victory at home to Ayr on a day when both the teams below them in Ladbrokes League One also won.

Sean McKenzie's 55th-minute own goal separated the teams, making it two straight wins for Colin Nish's side, both against opponents guaranteed play-off places.

In the 25th minute Cowdenbeath's Declan McDaid had the first effort on goal, forcing a parried save by Greg Fleming from the right of the area. With half-time approaching there was an identical scenario, but Fleming again kept McDaid out.

Substitute McKenzie had been on the pitch less than two minutes when he headed into his own net from a corner by McDaid.

Ayr pressed for an equaliser, Robby McCrorie hitting the bar late on from the right of the area, but the visitors could not break through.
