Cambridge City 0 - 1 Hitchin Town: Cambridge and Oxford in goalless stalemate

Posted Tuesday, March 29, 2016 by PA

Cambridge held Sky Bet League Two promotion-chasers Oxford to a 0-0 draw in the first goalless stalemate at the Abbey Stadium in more than 13 months.

The hosts impressed during the first half but were left to rue missed opportunities, while restricting Oxford to shots off target.

Luke Berry was central for Cambridge, missing the best chance of the half when failing to make proper contact with Jimmy Spencer's low cross.

Moments earlier Spencer curled an effort just wide from Berry's cross on the half hour.

Berry also headed off target from a corner by Max Clark, who was making his first start in professional football.

Oxford were limited to a wayward shot by Dean Bowery as he led a quick break.

Immediately after the interval Chris Maguire cut inside and fired fractionally wide from distance for the visitors, before on the hour Spencer fired over for Cambridge after being played into space by Ben Williamson.

In a frenetic end both teams saw penalty claims turned down inside a minute of each other.
