Mainz piled more misery on basement boys Hannover with a 1-0 win at the Niedersachsenstadion.
Jairo Samperio found some room among six Hannover defenders to shoot unchallenged into the bottom corner for the decisive goal in the 24th minute.
Such disorganisation at the back laid bare the size of the challenge Thomas Schaaf has in rescuing the Lower Saxony club this season, but a much-improved second half will have given him hope.
All that was lacking was a goal, while the Reds almost shipped a second when Christian Clemes shot against the crossbar late on.
Hannover have now lost six games in a row and have a mountain to climb if they are to beat the drop.
