Louis van Gaal admits his Manchester United team are not good enough as more money needs to be spent

In a strong message of intent the Dutchman who has already spent close to £300 million during his 18-month reign believes United still fall short when it comes to mixing with the game’s elite clubs.

United and Van Gaal face a critical night in Germany this week knowing that anything less than a win against Wolfsburg will likely see them fail to reach the lucrative knockout stage of the Champions League.

Failure will inevitably shine the spotlight on Van Gaal’s management qualities – the Dutchman has already threatened to quit if he feels the players aren’t responding to his methods.

Van Gaal though insists even more investment on the playing side is needed to propel United once again to the forefront of the game.

He said: “I don't think that we are able to win the Champions League now. That I don't think. But, maybe next year (United have a better chance) when we strengthen our selection again.”

Van Gaal continues to have the full support of the Old Trafford board even though he has come under fire from some fans for the style of football.

He will be given more money – around £150 million – in the summer as he continues to mould the squad into his image.

Van Gaal will definitely be in charge next season even though it seems more and more likely that Pep Guardiola will be available.

The Spaniard is set to turn down the offer of a new contract at Bayern Munich but Manchester United will not be in the market for his services.
