Mainz 0 - 3 Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski in the goals again as Bayern Munich beat Mainz in Bundesliga

Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga thanks to a 3-0 win at Mainz, their seventh win in a row this season.

Midweek hero Robert Lewandowski was at it again with two goals in the second half, with Kingsley Coman wrapping up victory.

Bayern could also afford to miss a penalty in the first half, but their superiority was rarely in doubt as they edged five points clear of Borussia Dortmund, who are in action on Sunday.

Mainz have developed a reputation of being problematic opponents for Bayern Munich and they soon set about confirming it, frustrating their guests until midway through the first half, when a penalty was awarded.

Coman was bundled over inside the penalty area by Pablo De Blasis and the usually assured Thomas Muller stepped up to the spot.

He made his usual slow run-up, waiting for Loris Karius to commit to a corner, but appeared to lean back when he shot, sending the ball high over the crossbar.

Mainz had a chance of their own in the 28th minute when Yoshinori Muto's shot only just missed the far post, suggesting it may not be such an easy afternoon for Bayern after all.

Lewandowski came on to put things right for Bayern against Wolfsburg in midweek with his nine-minute five-goal salvo starting in the 51st minute, and that is when he struck once again on Saturday.

Coman's cross found the Pole at the far post and he headed into the top corner, unstoppable for Karius.

There was to be no repeat of his midweek heroics, but Lewandowski was not going to stop at just one goal.

Arturo Vidal sent him through on goal, from a borderline offside position, and he dribbled past Karius before netting his seventh goal in five days.

Mainz's heads dropped and it was only a matter of time before the third goal arrived.

Douglas Costa burst down the left wing and his low cross was laid on a plate for Coman to net his second goal for Bayern from close range.

Mainz did not want to roll over like Wolfsburg had in midweek and Christian Clemens hit the angle of post and crossbar as they went close to grabbing a consolation.

Lewandowski nearly completed his hat-trick, but for a last-ditch tackle from Leon Balogun which denied him more personal joy in yet another win for Bayern.
