Chelsea are on alert amid reports transfer target Raphael Varane is considering his Real Madrid future.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho is understood to have been given the green light by club officials to make a £40million swoop for the defender in the summer, so news the French international has doubts over a long-term stay at the Bernabeu is only likely to be a boost.

French publication Le10Sport claim the centre-back is unhappy at playing second fiddle to Pepe and Sergio Ramos in Madrid and is looking for more first-team opportunities.

Pepe, though, is said to be holding talks about a new contract with Los Galacticos, meaning Varane's playing options could be further scuppered.

A bid in the region of €40million (£29.2m) may well be enough to tempt Madrid bosses into selling Varane, whose situation is also being closely watched by Manchester United.
