Pardew yesterday engineered the shock move from St James' Park to south London after revealing he wanted to take up the vacant post at Palace following Neil Warnock's Boxing Day sacking.

Although Newcastle owner Mike Ashley could have demanded £6m in compensation for Pardew - a certain deal-breaker - a £2m figure between the two clubs was reached yesterday and Palace chairman Steve Parish has got the 53-year-old former Eagles player on board.

It was a stunning switch which will shock the Premier League as Pardew has voluntarily left one of the biggest clubs in the land for Palace, who will face a battle to avoid regelation this season and have only a fraction of the Magpies' pulling power.

Ashley will now seek a replacement for Pardew and those in the frame include Ajax boss Frank de Boer, out of work Tony Pulis and Tim Sherwood, Hull City manager Steve Bruce and current Magpies skipper Fabricio Coloccini.

Pardew, who has also managed West Ham and Charlton in the capital, still has a family home in Surrey despite having spent just over four years at St James' Park.
