Dortmund throw away two leads

Posted Thursday, December 18, 2014 by PA

Borussia Dortmund threw away their lead twice to pick up only a point as they drew 2-2 at home to Wolfsburg on Wednesday night, and remain in the thick of a relegation battle

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Jurgen Klopp's crisis club the lead early on, but Kevin De Bruyne levelled for the visitors before half-time.

A goal from Ciro Immobile looked like it was going to be enough to earn the Westphalians a third straight home win, but Naldo silenced the Westfalenstadion late on by snatching his side a point.

The result leaves Dortmund inside the bottom three ahead of the final round of matches in 2014 at the weekend while Wolfsburg remain second, 11 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.

Aubameyang headed over inside the first minute before De Bruyne had two quick-fire shots to warn Dortmund not to expect things their own way.

Things went their way in the eighth minute, though, when Immobile's cross picked out Aubameyang to slide in and volley past Diego Benaglio.

The action swung from end to end with Wolfsburg getting their chances, and they levelled on the half-hour mark through De Bruyne's direct free-kick which Mitchell Langerak got his fingertips to, but could not keep out.

Langerak denied Vieirinha in a one on one as the Wolves continued to come at Dortmund, who continued to leave gaps at the back, but pose a considerable threat of their own going forwards.

Immobile was denied by Benaglio with Mats Hummels heading wide before Immobile again went close in what was already arguably his best performance in a Dortmund shirt before he crowned it with a goal.

It was no ordinary goal either as the Italian placed his shot beyond the reach of Benaglio from over 25 yards out.

Wolfsburg were not having any of it, though, and they hit back again with Naldo snatching his team a point with only five minutes remaining, heading in Ricardo Rodriguez's corner to deny Dortmund victory.
