Colin McMenamin grabbed a hat-trick as Stenhousemuir won 3-2 to send Ayr crashing to a fifth straight defeat.
Stenny striker McMenamin struck twice in the first half, either side of Ayr midfielder Scott McLaughlin's free-kick, and added a third early in the second period before Alan Forrest's late consolation.
McMenamin pounced for his first and the game's opening goal in the 12th minute when he despatched a low, right-footed shot beyond home goalkeeper David Hutton from 10 yards.
Ayr struck back just before the half-hour mark through McLaughlin, who rifled his eighth goal of the season into the bottom corner direct from a free-kick.
Home midfielder Kevin McKinlay steered his header just off target before Stehousemuir regained the lead three minutes prior to the interval when McMenamin headed Gary Oliver's cross into the top corner.
McMenamin completed his hat-trick in the 53rd minute, driving home another low shot from inside the penalty area.
Ayr enjoyed an equal share of second-half possession and pulled one goal back through Forrest's header from Michael Donald's cross.
