Promotion chasing Burton piled the misery on managerless Hartlepool with a 4-0 victory - their best of the season.
With Sam Collins in caretaker charge for the second time this season, Pools were looking to bounce back from their FA Cup exit at the hands of non-league Blyth Spartans.
But after a promising start, they were sunk by an Alex MacDonald double either side of half time, with further goals from Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Stuart Beavon.
Pools made a bright start and full-back Darren Holden was foiled on the edge of the six-yard box before Matthew Dolan curled a 20-yard free-kick inches wide.
The home pressure paid off on the stroke of half time when MacDonald's shot from the angle of the area bounced in off the inside of the far post.
And the winger struck again from eight yards 25 seconds into the second period after pouncing on Jacob Blyth's knockdown to take his tally for the season to seven.
Defender Cansdell-Sherriff headed Burton further in front from a Bryn Morris corner in the 65th minute and Beavon struck from 12 yards four minutes later.
