Tony Gray's first-half strike proved the difference as AFC Telford hung on to book a place in the second round of the FA Cup against League One Bristol City by defeating Basingstoke Town 2-1.

The Conference Premier strugglers took an early lead with Andy Parry heading powerfully beyond Dragons goalkeeper Stuart Moore from a corner.

They increased their advantage after 33 minutes when Gray tapped in Sam Smith's cross from close range.

But the visitors pulled themselves back into the tie shortly after the restart courtesy of fine work from Chris Flood.

The Dragons forward drove into the box at pace from the left in the 52nd minute before centring to gift Louie Soares a simple finish inside the six-yard box.

The Bucks were forced to see out the last half hour with 10 men, with Michael Grogan dismissed after receiving a second booking three minutes before the hour.

Flood wasted an opportunity to equalise for the visitors after he failed to get the ball out of his feet late on.

The tie ended with both sides a man down with Basingstoke's Jamie Brown receiving a second caution in stoppage time.
