Guillaume Gillet scored an own goal as Bastia were defeated 1-0 by Guingamp in Friday's Ligue 1 action at Stade Municipal de Roudourou.
Gillet got the final touch to Sambou Yatabare's strike just after the half-hour and it proved to be the decisive goal as Guingamp climbed away from the bottom three.
The result also meant that Bastia slipped second bottom, with their record only better than Evian after 12 league games.
Bastia had a good chance to open the scoring in the 16th minute when Floyd Ayite broke down the right wing and fired in a shot which struck the crossbar.
Guingamp then went agonisingly close in the 22nd minute as Claudio Beauvue sent in a cross which Moustapha Diallo headed inches wide.
However, the home side did find the net 10 minutes later when Gillet turned the ball into his own net.
Ronnie Schwartz delivered a corner to the near post where Yatabare swooped on the ball and fired towards goal. Gillet touched the ball on its way in and an own goal was awarded, much to the Bastia striker's dismay.
There were no other real chances of note in the first half, with the home side taking their slender lead into the break.
Bastia came out of the traps quickly in the second half, with Ayite picking out Francois Kamano 18 yards out. The midfielder pulled the trigger and Guingamp were left to thank the reactions of goalkeeper Jonas Lossl who made a block.
The home side almost doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Schwartz missed the target by a few inches before Hervin Ongenda went close at the other end for Bastia.
Ryad Boudebouz sent an excellent cross towards Ongenda, who missed the target from close range.
The last real chance of the match came in the 76th minute from Sylvain Marveaux, who beat Bastia defender Sebastien Squillaci and fired inches wide.
Despite being unable to add to the first-half own goal, Guingamp held on to claim victory.
