LUKE SHAW claims Manchester United will be "a scary team to face" when they are finally firing on all cylinders.

And he says they do not consider themselves to be out of the Premier League title race despite being 10 points adrift of Chelsea after blowing hot and cold in their first nine games.

Manchester United have lost their old fear factor in the 18 months since winning the League championship for the 20th time in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season as manager.

But Shaw says Sunday's battling draw with Jose Mourinho's title pacesetters underlined they are becoming a force again under the demanding stewardship of Louis van Gaal while lifting morale ahead of this weekend's Manchester derby.

"It has been a fight but we talk in the dressing room and at training and we know we have still got the best to come," said Shaw.

"I don't think we are playing our best at the moment and sometimes you saw that against Chelsea. It will take time but when we are all on form we are going to be a scary team to face.

"Of course we are still in the title race. It's a long season and we are at the start of it so you don't know what will happen during the middle of season. We just have to keep winning the games coming up.

"There are some tough fixtures but we know we are good enough to win them.

"The players are adapting to the manager's philosophy. We work on it a lot in training so everyone knows what job they have to do."

Former Southampton defender Shaw does not need telling the importance of the Manchester derby both in terms of local bragging rights and the bigger picture of the title race.

"It's pretty obvious," he added, "I've watched it [on TV] and I've seen how much it means to everyone. It's something I'm thrilled to be involved in, something I'm going to cherish and look forward to.

"The Chelsea result has done a lot for our belief. It was our toughest test of the season so far. It's a huge result for us and when you look back at the game maybe we could have got more than one point. We had our chances but we never gave up."

One of United's most impressive performers on Sunday was the much-maligned Marouane Fellaini who, according to United legend Bryan Robson, struggled with the expectations of playing for the club last season following his £27.5m move from Everton.

Fellaini's first start of the season on Sunday followed up his goal after coming on as a substitute in the draw at West Brom and Robson believes he can be an asset in Van Gaal's new-look team.

"It's a little bit too early to get carried away but I do see encouraging signs," he said. "Fellaini has been one of these players who comes to United and finds it totally different to any other club in terms of the expectations from the fans and the way United are expected to play football.

"He didn't really find his feet in his first season but he knows what it's all about now and the last couple of performances have been very good. He knows what's expected now and he seems to have settled down and is playing the football he was playing for Everton.

"I've seen it over the years at this club. You see players come in from clubs that don't have the aura and expectations of United. Some adapt to it really well. Other players come in and they worry and don't settle down because of the expectations.

"Fellaini definitely looks as if he's grasped what it's all about now. He's starting to play like we know he can play.

"I think Van Gaal put him into the team to play Chelsea because of his physical presence. Chelsea are a big strong side and you have to have a physical presence against them and also Manchester City because, if you're weak, they'll just roll over the top of you. They're big powerful teams and they're successful.

"I can see Fellaini playing again on Sunday because he's the type of player we need to cope against City." blob

Bryan Robson was speaking at the unveiling of the 'Treble Collection' and customised First Team squad watches by Bulova, Manchester United's Official Timekeeping partner.
