England boss Hodgson denies he was about to sub Rooney before free-kick goal, pictures suggest otherwise

With England struggling to find a way through Estonia tonight and with the game deadlocked 70 minutes in, boss Roy Hodgson was preparing his third and final substitution.

He sent Rickie Lambert out to warm up, and ITV claim they spotted the substitution form, and that it read ‘Wayne Rooney’

In the 74th minute, Lambert looked all ready to come on, but when Rooney scored the free-kick, he went back to his seat smiling to himself.

Of course, that by no means proves Rooney was going to be withdrawn, merely that the change was held off for the time being as they’d scored, but Hodgson didn’t sound too convincing when denying any knowledge of the form:

'I was in discussions with other members of my staff, I don’t know about forms going in.

'No doubt you’re going to produce some evidence in a minute about a form going in, but that wasn’t my intention.

'We were going to put Rickie Lambert on and we were discussing which of the forwards to take off.

'I hadn’t made up my mind, it was probably more likely to be Danny Welbeck and it had to be Danny in the end because he tweaked his ankle.”
