MR GLUM: Wayne has food for thought after meal with Rory

The golf ace and the football striker went out for a Chinese meal in Manchester after the shock home defeat to Swansea at Old Trafford.

And United fans will hope some of the McIlroy magic has rubbed off on Wayne, 28, who was part of England’s World Cup flop.

Ulsterman Rory, 25, is world No1 after scooping the Open and the US PGA championships in recent weeks.

But it was the first time United had lost at home on the opening day of the season since 1972, and came just days after Rooney was named permanent United captain by new boss Louis van Gaal, 63.

The one consolation was he scored in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat.

McIlroy, who was at the game, had earlier retweeted Rooney’s message, with the football ace saying: “Very proud to be named captain of @ManUtd. Huge honour and I can’t wait to lead the team out.”

The boyhood United fan was paraded before the crowd prior to kick-off, proudly sporting his latest trophies.
