Mikel Arteta is new Arsenal skipper

Arsenal have named Spain midfielder Mikel Arteta as their new captain, manager Arsene Wenger confirmed after the 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City at Wembley.

Arteta, who was vice-captain to Thomas Vermaelen before the latter's departure to Barcelona, served as skipper for much of last season when the Belgium international was out of the side through injury or selection.

Speaking to Arsenal's official website, Wenger said Germany World Cup-winner Per Mertesacker would be the North London club's new vice-captain.

"It will be No. 1 Arteta and No. 2 Mertesacker," the manager said.

Arteta used social media to express his delight. He tweeted: "Great to lift another trophy and a massive honour to be named captain of Arsenal. Let's have a great season."

He added: "Being captain is a big honour and a privilege, with a big responsibility. I will try to stand up and do my best for my players."
