'I need a new challenge' - Mazzarri announces Napoli exit

The 51-year-old feels that his "cycle" at the San Paolo has come to an end after four years in charge of the Partenopei and is ready to begin a new chapter in his career

Walter Mazzarri has announced that he is to step down as Napoli coach after expressing a desire to seek a new challenge.

The 51-year-old has been linked with Inter and Roma in recent weeks and revealed prior to the San Paolo side's 2-1 defeat to the Giallorossi on Sunday that he would make a decision on his future after the match.

And true to his word, Mazzarri confirmed that he would be vacating his role at the southern Italian club but refused to name the identity of his next employers as he also hinted at a possible sabbatical.

"From next year onwards I will no longer be the coach of Napoli, I did not say anything before because there would've been a backlash which could have had a devastating effect on the team and the city," he told Radio Rai.

"I must thank the president and [sporting director Riccardo] Bigon for trying to change my mind, but I made this decision because I needed a new challenge.

"My next team? Until now I have not considered anyone in particular, but tomorrow [on Monday] I'll have a look around. Based on what I can offer, I could join a new club immediately, otherwise I'd take a year off."
