Political commentator David Torrance said: “Endorsements matter in America because voters are more likely to listen to what celebrities and sports stars say than to boring old politicians.”

Rooney’s backing also prompted a flurry of replies on Twitter. David Stockdale posted: “Your followers might just make the difference between an Obama victory or a Romney disaster!!”

And British telly star Piers Morgan, now a presenter in the US, declared: “Game-changing endorsement.”

A Man Utd source said: “Wayne might not have done brilliantly at school but he has turned into a shrewd businessman and is becoming increasingly interested in the world as he matures.”

Dozens of celebrities including Mariah Carey, Steven Spielberg and George Clooney have already backed Obama.
