Petkovic: Lazio were not clinical enough

The Biancocelesti coach insists his team were unfortunate not to emerge victorious against Genoa, but believes they are still on track for a successful season
Lazio's 100 per cent start to the new campaign came to a grinding halt against Genoa on Sunday, but Vladimir Petkovic chose to focus on the positives from their loss at the Stadio Olimpico.
Marco Borriello's 79th minute winner was the difference between the two sides, despite the Biancocelesti's dominance, and the Bosnian coach was happy with his side's showing.
"One can never be satisfied after a defeat, but we didn’t do so badly as to deserve this result,” he told reporters at the post-match press conference.
"We had so many chances and conceded a goal after a slip, but this is football. We have to accept it and compliment our opponents for making the most of their opportunities.
"In the first-half we lacked determination, while after the break we pinned Genoa back, but were not clinical enough.
Brazilian midfielder Hernanes impressed once again and Petkovic was full of praise for the 27-year-old's level of performance.
“[He]showed again tonight that he is a complete midfielder who works to win the ball back, to create chances and go one-on-one. He is very important for our team," he praised.
But despite waxing lyrical about his side's showing, the 49-year-old was less than impressed with the efforts of Mauro Zarate.
"I certainly expected more from Mauro Zarate, but I hope this game will act as a lesson for him and all of us," he added.
