Macca, 70, who will top the showbiz bill at the curtain-raiser, told Shortlist magazine: “It would’ve been great for him to lead out our British football team.

"But some person somewhere said, ‘So-and-so’s playing better.’ Like it matters.”

Last night a Team GB source said former England hero Pearce would NOT be moved — and that Macca should Let It Be.

The source added: “It doesn’t matter if Paul McCartney, the Queen and every star in Hollywood has their say.

"Stuart Pearce has picked his team and that’s it.”

Pearce, 50, picked Craig Bellamy, 33, Ryan Giggs, 38, and Micah Richards, 24, as his over-age players ahead of global soccer icon Becks.

He insisted Beckham, 37, was simply not good enough for his team.

The former Man U and Real Madrid star is still on a list of 35 players named by Pearce earlier this month, from which 18 squad members were picked plus four reserves.
