Striker could be set for vice-captaincy role

Roy eyes Roo for vice-captaincy
Wayne Rooney: Admits there is a good chemistry under manager Roy Hodgson

Roy Hodgson has revealed Wayne Rooney is under consideration to be the new England vice-captain.

The Manchester United striker returns from his two-match ban for the Three Lions against Ukraine in their decisive Group D game at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk.

And Rooney is set to be partnered by his Red Devils' team-mate Danny Welbeck or Andy Carroll against the co-hosts on Tuesday evening.

A draw in that match would guarantee England a spot in the last eight after picking up four points from their opening two games against France and Sweden.

"We haven't designated one yet but he is very much a candidate," said Hodgson.

"Quite frankly, with him not being available we haven't really felt the necessity before now to decide on that.

"But we are very much considering him for that position, yes."

Trust

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old admits that the England camp feel much more like a 'club team' under the Hodgson regime.

Rooney said: "It feels more like a club team now, rather than an international team.

"Everyone gets on with each other and there's a lot of trust between the players and the coaching staff, and everyone's happy.

"You only have to go to the hotel to see the lads. You've got (Manchester) City players playing snooker with United players, Chelsea players playing Liverpool.

"Everyone's mixing, everyone's getting on well and there's a good chemistry between the lads.

"At the minute, it's certainly the most comfortable I think the team have been off the pitch since I've been in the squad."
