STICKING AROUND ... Benoit Assou-Ekotto
BENOIT ASSOU-EKOTTO has hit out at reports he has a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with Tottenham supremo Daniel Levy to quit the club in the summer.
The Cameroon full-back was quoted in a French interview claiming Levy promised he could leave White Hart Lane for a bigger club.
But last night Assou-Ekotto, recovering from a dislocated shoulder, insisted he is willing to play for Spurs next season — even if they miss out on the Champions League.
He declared: “I am fully committed to Tottenham. I’m proud to represent the club whatever the competition.
“It is a wonderful club and I look forward to recovering from my injury in time for next season.”
The 28-year-old, signed from Lens six years ago, is quoted in France Football magazine as saying: “When I met my chairman last January, he told me if a club bigger than Tottenham came for me, they would not necessarily be against a departure.
“There was a gentleman’s agreement. As he is a man of his word, I hope it will make things easier if a great club comes in.”
