Catania FC vs AS Roma - Scores level before abandonment
Posted Saturday, January 14, 2012 by PA
Catania's Serie A clash with Roma was abandoned after 65 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch at the Stadio Massimino with the score at 1-1.
Nicola Legrottaglie had put the home side in front in the 24th minute of the game with Daniele De Rossi equalising four minutes later.
Catania dominated the first half and missed a hatful of chances to lead, but the conditions deteriorated when the teams emerged for the second half.
The rain, which had been falling over the Sicilian city all afternoon, rendered the pitch unplayable in various areas and, while the two team captains informed referee Paolo Tagliavento that they would like to carry on when he first halted play early in the second half, they had no option but to leave the field of play 20 minutes into the second half.
Tagliavento re-emerged 15 minutes later to officially declare the game abandoned after a further test of the conditions.
The Italian Football League has yet to announce when the the final 25 minutes of the game will be played, with the possibility of the match being concluded.
