Arjen Robben retires from International duty after Netherlands fail to qualify for World Cup
Wednesday, October 11 2017 by 7MTV-
Arjen Robben retired from international football on Tuesday (10th August) after the Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, despite the 33 year-old scoring twice in Holland's 2-0 win over Sweden in Amsterdam.
It was the end of an era in Amsterdam on Tuesday, where after 96 caps and 37 goals Arjen Robben announced his retirement from international football.
The Netherlands captain scored twice as his side beat Sweden 2-0 in their Group A World Cup qualifier, but ultimately it wasn't enough.
The Dutch needed to beat Sweden by seven goals to move into second place in Group A and make it to the play-offs.
The Netherlands, three-times World Cup runners-up, have now missed out on Russia 2018 after also failing to qualify for last year's European Championship in France.
Robben was part of the Dutch squads which reached the semi-finals at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, four years after losing in the final in South Africa.
The 33 year-old made his debut for Holland at the age of 19 in a friendly against Portugal in April 2003.
He is joint fourth on the Netherlands' all-time goalscorers list, level with former Arsenal forward Dennis Bergkamp.
Robben will now concentrate on playing for his club Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga.
