France's Julien Benneteau upset the world number 12, Davis Ferrer, in the first round of the ATP Cincinnati Masters on Monday (15th August).

While most of the world's top players are still recovering from the Rio Olympics, the hard circuit in North America continued in Cincinnati.

Julien Benneteau pulled off an unlikely victory in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters on Monday when he beat world number 12 David Ferrer 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Benneteau has slipped to 294 in the ATP world rankings, but he bought back memories of his prime when he was ranked world number 25.

This victory over the world number 12 is, by a long way, the biggest scalp of what has been a poor season for Benneteau.

There was also a big win for American teenager Jared Donaldson.

The 19-year-old wild card, ranked 122 in the world, beat the Spanish veteran Nicolas Almagro (ranked 47) in straight sets.

It has been an outstanding year for 30-year-old Pablo Cuevas.

The Uruguayan added another big win to his 2016 list with a hard-fought three set victory over world number 29 Sam Querrey.

Cuevas jumped up to number 19 on the back of tournament victories earlier in the season in Brazil.

The favourite for the tournament is the double Olympic Champion Andy Murray, who is due to start his campaign in the second round on Tuesday (16th August).

Murray's fellow Olympians Rafael Nadal and Kei Nishikori are also scheduled to play in the event.
