The men's tournament at the 2016 Rogers Cup got underway with an all-Croatian first round match between Borna Coric and Ivan Dodig.
Dodig stole the first set 7-5.
Coric got his game going in the second set and took it by six games to four.
The momentum was firmly with Coric. He closed out the match. 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 .
On paper, Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov had an easy opening match.
He was up against Japan's Yuichi Sugita ranked 107.
However, Dimitrov struggled with his serve in the opening set and Sugita took it 7-5.
In the second Dimitrov reeled off five points in a row in the tie break to take the set and level the match.
Dimitrov closed out a 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory.
John Isner made his first appearance at the 2016 Rogers Cup against Dudi Sela
Sela served out to take the first set 6-4.
Isner levelled the match- 6-3.
Isner completed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win and will now face Ryan Harrison.
Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov upset Australia's Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3.
Backed by a hometown crowd, the 17-year-old Shapovalov took advantage of the world No. 19 Kyrgios's many unforced errors.
