Roger Federer beat Taylor Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in Stuttgart on Thursday (9th June) to claim his spot in the quarter-finals of the Mercedes Cup.

Roger Federer enjoyed a solid start to the Mercedes Cup on Wedneday before rain stopped play in his second-round match.

The players resumed on Thursday at 4-4 in the first set and Federer sealed the opening set by winning the first two games of the day.

His 18-year-old American opponent fought back in the second set and broke the Swiss in the last game to even up the score at one set all.

But the 17-time Grand Slam winner saw out the final set 6-4 to claim his spot in the quarter-finals.

Federer was playing his first match since losing to Dominic Thiem in Rome in May, having pulled out of the French Open with a back injury.
