World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset, speaking in Singapore on Friday (15th April), talks about how rugby sevens need to be alert to dangers of doping ahead of the sport's debut at Rio Olympics.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Bernard Lapasset, World Rugby chairman (on doping and rugby):
"That is really an important point that we have some troubles in sport at the moment, in terms of the system for anti-doping and the system of transparency of governance as well. The situation we have in rugby is clear, we have messaging very clear, keep the rugby clean. Clean is transparency in governance, very crucial for us, we have delivered the key messaging, open the door for everybody that we have in the committee for governance in rugby, and same time in sport we have the reference for clean message in terms of the anti-doping system. We have an agreement with WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), we've had an agreement for long time, we're changing the process to update for the Olympics, now we are ready, totally completed the transparency for that. It is important that rugby, we get the signal that we are an example for the future of the players."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Bernard Lapasset, World Rugby chairman (on meldonium violations amongst rugby sevens players):
"We shall see the future of the sport, it is not my sport. I cannot make the judgement on that. But it is important that we can be careful about... nobody is there outside of the incident, we have to be careful of that. And continuing to fight against doping. Doping is really not sport. Doping is really not transparency... and the values that we have in sport, that is education, is fair play, it's solidarity, it's the key principle that we have in rugby, and we keep it this way."
