Racing 92 eliminated three-time defending champions Toulon from the European Rugby Champions Cup with a narrow 19-16 quarter-final win on Sunday (10th April).
Racing knew they could call on the services of New Zealand World Cup-winning fly half Dan Carter to face three-time defending champions Toulon in their quarter-final of the European Rugby Champions Cup on Sunday (10th April).
Carter proved his worth straight away at the Stade Yves-du-Manoir, and gave the home side the lead with an early penalty.
An intercept from Argentine international winger Juan Imhoff saw him coast in for a third-minute try.
Carter's conversion the hosts to a 10-0 advantage within 5 minutes. A nerveless start to their bid to make the semi-finals for the first time in their history.
Toulon weren't likely to roll over and a fine break and offload by Josua Tuisova set up Charles Ollivon for his try.
After Dan Carter came off with a thigh injury, Racing's kicking duties transferred to Maxime Machenaud.
The latter stages became a kicking competition: Machenaud exchanging penalties with Jonathan Pelissie.
Manchenaud had a great chance to put Racing in front in the 75th minute, but fluffed his kick in front of the posts.
After Levan Chilachava was penalised in the 78th minute, Machenaud took his chance to seal a dramatic 19-16 win.
Racing now face English Premiership side Leicester in the semi-finals in Nottingham on 24th April after Leicester beat Stade Francais 41-12 earlier on Sunday.
