Drew Mitchell scored a try with 80 minutes on the clock as Toulon beat Wasps 15-11 in the European Rugby Champions Cup on Sunday (17 January) to narrowly maintain their unbeaten home record in European competition.
Pool five leaders Wasps visited second-placed Toulon on Sunday in a mouth-watering European Champions Cup tie.
Toulon were protecting an unbeaten home record going into the game and they showed why in the 13th minute with a lightning break from their own 22.
Josua Tuisova was the man who led the break before passing for Quade Cooper to finish the move with the opening try.
Things got worse for Wasps when George Smith was shown a yellow card by referee Nigel Owens for a late hit on Bryan Habana.
Eric Escande converted the resulting penalty, however, Toulon were not able to make their man advantage count and Wasps survived relatively unscathed.
Into the second half and with Toulon leading 8-6 Replacement Freddie Michalak had the chance to increase the home sides lead. However, he squandered this kick at goal in the 67th minute, having already missed another in the 60th.
And Wasps punished the Frenchman's wasteful kicking with a try in the 71st minute. Jimmy Gopperth quick pass sent Guy Thompson through. He managed to break through the Toulon defence to send Wasps fans and players alike into a state of delirium.
However, there was to be a sting in the tail for the visitors. With 80 minutes on the clock Toulon's pressure finally told as Nonu released Drew Mitchell who broke Wasps hearts with the last gasp try.
Michalak added the conversion and Toulon escaped with a 15-11 win that took them above Wasps at the top of Pool Five and extended their unbeaten home run.
