Meanwhile Russia's Anastasia Vasina and Anna Vozakova overcame China's Yuanyuan Ma and Changning Zhang in the first match.

Then Maria Bratkova and Svetlana Popova sealed a second spot in the Olympic Games for Russia with a hard-fought three-set win over China's Fan Wang and Yuan Yue.

In the men's section, Austria earned a place at the Olympics after both their pairs won against Mexico.

Russia's men didn't disappoint the home crowd and successfully negotiated their passage to the Olympics.

Their two pairs of Dmitri Barsouk and Yury Bogatov, plus Serguei Prokopiev and Konstantin Semenov, beat their Polish opposition to qualify.

All the winning teams can look forward to playing at Horse Guards Parade in London which will be specially modified to host the beach volleyball event.
