The process for elimination at the World Cup Olympic Qualification Tournament was complicated, yet the prize was simple - a place at the Olympic Games in London.
On Saturday, the countries were narrowed down to four - effectively two finals in each gender- which will be played on Sunday.
In the men's event, Russia will play Poland after the two teams beat Mexico to make it 2-0.
Both Austria pairs beat China's teams to reach the other men's final.
The convoluted system actually meant that Mexico, despite losing to Russia, could still qualify if they beat Chile.
They made it difficult for themselves and had to win a golden set against Chile - but emerged victorious eventually.
The women's side was not quite as confusing. Italy and Netherlands will play each other on Sunday in one final. China will face Russia in the other.
The China pairing of Ma and Zhang had to battle hard for each point to beat Kenya, but they won in straight sets.
The result was added to the other China win by Wang and Yue.
For all the complications, there will be at least some certainty when Sunday ends. The four teams who win will know they're on their way to London 2012.
