  • Roy Hodgson takes charge of England against Slovenia but how much has his starting XI changed from the very first team he picked to face Norway in a friendly three years ago?
  • Rob Green | Green’s first England cap came a decade ago in 2005 and he continues to play backup to undisputed No. 1 Joe Hart. Green started against Norway, keeping a clean sheet, and was part of Roy Hodgson’s Euro 2012 campaign but, while he remains part of the England set-up, at 35, his international career is coming to a close and Hart has little competition for his place.
  • Joleon Lescott | The defender was a member of Hodgson’s Euro 2012 squad, scoring in the 1-1 draw with France, but fell out of favour while at Manchester City with his last involvement coming back in 2013. Chelsea defender Gary Cahill is now firmly established as Hodgson’ first choice centre-back and, after a title-winning campaign at Chelsea, is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

  • Phil Jagielka | Jagielka remains a key part of the England defence but faces competition for his spot from Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. Indeed, the Everton man had to watch from the bench as Smalling partnered Cahill in the Three Lions’ warm-up game against Ireland, suggesting that Hodgson may favour the Manchester United man against Slovenia.
  • Leighton Baines | Baines started the friendly against Norway but did not feature at Euro 2012 and spent most of his early international career playing backup to Ashley Cole. Following Cole’s retirement Baines looked set to be England’s left-back for the foreseeable future but the emergences of Ryan Bertrand, Kieran Gibbs and Luke Shaw mean that Baines is no longer an automatic pick. Indeed, he may lose out to Gibbs against Slovenia while 19-year-old Shaw looks to be the future.
  • James Milner | The midfielder has been a regular pick by Hodgson, who took him to Euro 2012 and World Cup 2014, although his versatility means that he’s used mainly as a squad player than a regular starter. The new Liverpool man may start against Slovenia but faces competition from the naturally left-footed Fabian Delph, who has broken into the England squad after a impressive season with Aston Villa.
  • Scott Parker | Voted England player of the year in 2011 and was vying for the captaincy before Hodgson appointed Steven Gerrard as his skipper. He started all four of England’s game at Euro 2012 but injury effectively ended his international career as younger players such as Ross Barkley and Jack Wilshere hit the international scene, with the Arsenal midfielder expected to start against Slovenia.
  • Steven Gerrard | The Liverpool midfielder was appointed permanent captain by Hodgson when he took over and continued to lead his country until his retirement from international football last summer. Wayne Rooney has taken over the armband while Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mate, Jordan Henderson, has established himself as an England regular with Michael Carrick also an option for Hodgson, despite missing this squad through injury, and Adam Lallana also called up.
  • Stewart Downing | The winger started Hodgson’s first game and was named in his Euro 2012 squad but didn’t play a single match in Poland and Ukraine. Downing then fell out of the reckoning altogether before being somewhat surprisingly named in Hodgson’s England squad in November for the games against Slovenia and Scotland. However, the 30-year-old did not make the current squad and may struggle to feature again with England, particularly with Theo Walcott and Raheem Sterling providing pace and width down the flanks, and with youth on their side.
  • Ashley Young | The Manchester United man was a semi-regular feature in Hodgson's early squads and went to Euro 2012 but has not played for his country since September 2013 as poor club form saw him drift out of contention. He surely would have been rewarded for a fine 2014-15 with a call-up this summer, though, were it not for a slight injury.
  • Andy Carroll | The striker started against Norway and played his part at Euro 2012, scoring against Sweden. However, he hasn’t featured for the Three Lions since October 2012 with a succession of injuries keeping him out of the reckoning. His chances of a return look slim at best, too, with Hodgson having handed Wayne Rooney the captaincy and with Danny Welbeck prolific so far at international level and Daniel Sturridge, if he can stay fit, also a key part of the manager’s thinking.
