Memphis explains why he prefers not to be called Depay

Barcelona have finally completed the Bosman signing of Memphis Depay, with the Dutch forward signing a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season, yet the Dutchman has previously explained why he prefers not to be addressed by his surname.
Memphis has his more well-known moniker on the back of his shirt and this dates back to a decision he took in 2012, to reject any links with his birth-father Dennis Depay.
The forward's father abandoned him at the age of four, which caused a lot of resentment from Memphis, and he refuses to wear the name of someone who neglected him.
"I will never forgive him," Memphis told the BBC.
"Do not call me Depay, call me Memphis.
"No, I don't want to explain exactly what happened at home because I don't want to make people feel ashamed. And that's how it will remain because I've already moved on."
