Manchester City star Eric Garcia is set to leave the Etihad this summer having fallen down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola with Arsenal and Chelsea keen on the Spanish defender

Arsenal and Chelsea are on red alert after Barcelona threw the signing of Manchester City misfit Eric Garcia into doubt.

Garcia agreed a free transfer move to Barca weeks ago - but the cash-strapped Catalan giants have now changed the terms of that deal.

They want the 20-year-old to accept a lower fixed salary, with the rest made up of bonus payments based on performance.

That has opened the door for rival clubs - with Arsenal and Chelsea among those who had previously approached the Spain defender.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta worked with Garcia at City and is a big fan, and Chelsea are also on the lookout for young centre backs.

Both clubs have the financial firepower to beat Barcelona’s offer to the player, who had verbally agreed terms on a five-year contract.

But Garcia has already turned down more money to stay at City and Barca hope his desire to rejoin them will convince him to accept their revised offer.

The City starlet, who has fallen out of favour with Pep Guardiola this season, has asked for time to consider the proposal.

But Barcelona have set him a deadline to give them a definitive decision by the end of the month.
