Luis Suarez transfer from Barcelona to Atletico Madrid has been strongly criticised by Lionel Messi, and the Argentine's wife Antonella has added to the heartbreak with a heartfelt message to the Uruguayan’s partner Sofia

Lionel Messi's wife Antonella has left Luis Suarez's partner Sofia in tears after she shared a heartfelt message following the Uruguayan’s Barcelona exit.

Suarez left Barcelona for Atletico Madrid this week after being deemed surplus to requirements by new manager Ronald Koeman.

Barcelona captain Messi strongly criticised the club’s handling of the situation in an Instagram post, and shared his sorrow at his close friend leaving the Nou Camp.

But now his wife, Antonella, has followed suit with an incredibly heartwarming post about the Suarez family and her pal Sofia.

Antonella wrote on social media: "Bolu, my friend, my sister… thank you for so many years together.

"For so many laughs, so many Mates and unending chats.

"You were like family for us. I can't tell you how much, so very much, I'm going to miss you and your amazing family.

"Thank you for everything! Let's hope life keeps giving us moments [to spend] together and I'm sure we'll see each other again soon!

"I love you, your [family]. All the best with this new step."

Sofia quickly replied: "And when I thought I had no more tears I found this!

"Thank you for so much of what you said and for all that we have left to live …I love you, I adore you."

Suarez admitted that he was surprised by the decision in a press conference on Thursday, which Messi was also present at.

An emotional Suarez said: “It is such a surprise, I didn't have anything really prepared. The club has always had so much confidence in me since 2014 when they signed me.

"The club trusted me knowing the conditions that came after the mistake I made.

"The conditions that I came here, they surrounded me, the confidence they had in me, it wasn't easy to accept this, the coaches and the team-mates, the way they accepted me when I came, it was amazing.

"All the people know the sacrifice that I made in these years to come to Barcelona and play for the best team in the world. I am aware we are at the end of an era but I should be very proud of everything we have done.

"The club needed changes and the coach didn't count on me. I want to show that I can still perform at a high level.

"I’m joining Atletico Madrid with a lot of excitement, but I still haven't thought about what it will be like to play against Barcelona. I haven't fully digested it yet.”
