Man Utd change stance on £80m Jack Grealish transfer as Red Devils eye Jadon Sancho swoop

Manchester United have been linked to both Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish this summer.

Manchester United appear to have been put off the idea of chasing Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish and will instead focus on signing Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, according to reports.

Avoiding relegation to the Championship has significantly strengthened the Villans' hopes of keeping their captain, who scored against West Ham on the final day as a 1-1 draw kept them up.

The 24-year-old managed eight goals and six assists as he led Villa to safety and another season in the Premier League.

And the Birmingham-born attacker's performances this term have attracted United, who also have long-standing interest in Leicester's James Maddison.

But having cooled their admiration for the latter in recent months, Sky Sports now say that the Red Devils are also going off the idea of signing Grealish.

Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a big admirer of the Villa skipper, Villa's top-flight survival means the fee it will take to prise away their prized asset has risen considerably.

Grealish was expected to push for a move away from his boyhood club if they suffered the drop to the second tier which would have reduced his price tag.

But it will take a bid in excess of £80million before Villa are even tempted to discuss the midfielder's future.

And United reportedly have concerns as to how Grealish would slot into the team with Bruno Fernandes relishing in the No 10 role since joining in January.

While Grealish can play off the left, it is there where Marcus Rashford has thrived at Old Trafford this term with the best goalscoring return of his career so far.

Solskjaer also has Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood as starting options at present, with Ed Woodward therefore unlikely to sanction a big-money bid.

Instead, United are focused on signing right-sided winger Sancho, who is more likely to command a starting role in the Norwegian coach's system.

The Old Trafford outfit feel Sancho is a better fit for Solskjaer's side, particularly given that they do not have a natural wide-man on that side.

Although Greenwood has starred there in recent weeks, in the long-term, the 17-goal United academy graduate is seen as more of a centre-forward and they have lacked an elite right winger for some time.

Sky Sports add that United have yet to make a bid for Sancho but that the England international has been the subject of contact between the two clubs.

The sticking point is his fee, with Dortmund determined to hold out for over £100m for the 20-year-old.

United are reluctant to splash so much despite him being their top target, with time at a premium with Dortmund having made it clear they want any deal done by August 10.

That is when the Bundesliga club return to pre-season training and they are keen to have a replacement in by then if Sancho is to return to Manchester, having previously been a trainee for United's neighbours Manchester City.

With Sancho tied down in Germany for another two seasons, Dortmund are relaxed about the future of the attacker - who produced 20 goals and 20 assists in 44 games in the season just finished.

If they do not receive a bid meeting their valuation, it is claimed, they are happy to wait another year and sell him at a lower price in 2021.

United have drawn up a list of alternatives to Sancho with Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman a potential loan signing, but Sancho remains their No 1 option.

The Red Devils will hope that sealing Champions League qualification, after finishing third in the Premier League courtesy of their 2-0 win over Leicester at the weekend, can provide them the kind of added finance to get a deal over the line.
