The Manchester United veteran and his family opened Tapeo & Wine in the city in 2016 after being unimpressed with the Spanish food on offer in the city.

But latest accounts for the restaurant – which has been given rave reviews by diners for its food and wine – show it has large debts.

Books filed to Companies House recently revealed it has total debts of £772,086 for 2018 - up from £593,548 in 2017.

The accounts showed it had £46,422 in cash and stock worth £14,697.

The restaurant is run by his dad Juan Mata Rodriguez with cash from the midfielder.

A report into the firm’s trading revealed: “The company is dependent upon the financial support of JMM Rodriguez who has indicated that he will not withdraw this financial support in the foreseeable future.

"On this basis, the directors consider it appropriate to prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis.”

One reviewer on TripAdvisor wrote: “This is by far the best in the city centre. The service is always excellent (friendly and knowledgeable) and the food is outstanding.”
