Newport boss Michael Flynn hits back at ‘clowns’ after Morecambe win

Newport manager Michael Flynn hit back at his critics after his side beat Morecambe 1-0 at Rodney Parade.

Despite taking the Exiles to within a whisker of promotion last season, Flynn faced much criticism from his own fans after last weekend’s 5-0 defeat at Oldham.

But a 69th-minute goal from Dale Gorman got his side back to winning ways.

Flynn said: “The injuries have been so extreme that we haven’t been able to keep a settled team. Look at the teams at the top, they are near-enough picking the same team.

“You get the clowns who say ‘he’s lost the dressing room’ but I think that performance showed there’s no dressing room lost. It’s just an easy thing to say for people who have never been involved in football.

“I don’t want to use the pitch as an excuse, but it has absolutely gone. It is appalling and hard to play any football on it.

“Some of the supporters are shouting out ‘let’s try to get the ball down’. It’s crazy and the worst it has been. I need to find out what’s going to happen to it because it will affect my recruitment. It’s as simple as that.”

Morecambe came closest when Jordan Slew was found unmarked but sent his header just wide. They pushed hard in six minutes of stoppage time, but it was too little, too late.

“It was a disappointing result and performance from us,” said Shrimps manager Derek Adams. “The pitch wasn’t great and didn’t allow us to play our best football.

“Newport are a very good side and this is a difficult place to come and win.

“We’ve just got to keep working hard for each other and if we do that I’m sure the results will follow suit. There was obviously a lot of emotion out there but I thought my side competed well.

“We just didn’t do enough to win.”
