EXCLUSIVE: Southampton want to bring Adam Lallana back from Liverpool but will face competition from the likes of Leicester, Arsenal and Tottenham.

Southampton are ready to try to tempt Adam Lallana back to the south coast in the summer, Express Sport understands. The Liverpool midfielder, who came through the famed academy at Southampton, has become a summer target for Leicester as well as Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham.

The former Saints star’s contract at Anfield runs out this summer, and Leicester were reported this week to have made an initial approach for the 31-year-old.

Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers said on Thursday: "I’ve seen a lot of stuff around Adam and that we’ve approached Liverpool, which isn’t the case," said the Northern Irishman on Thursday.

"He’s at the stage of his contract where he will have options."

Lallana left Southampton to sign for Liverpool in a £25million deal in the summer of 2014, but is regarded as unlikely to sign another deal with Jurgen Klopp’s side, who are ready to let him go.

The England midfielder’s time at Anfield has been hit by injury, and he has become a bit-part player at the club under Klopp, starting only three Premier League games this season.

In his five-and-a-half years at Liverpool, Lallana has scored 22 times and registered the same amount of assists in 175 appearances across all competitions.

But his last two seasons were wrecked by a series of injuries, leading to him only making 25 league appearances between 2017 and 2019.

The Bournemouth-born midfielder made 265 appearances for Saints between 2006 and 2014.

He joined the club as a 12-year-old and played in League One, the Championship and the Premier League for the club.

Lallana was even the Southampton captain prior to his move to Merseyside, when he followed team-mate Rickie Lambert while Dejan Lovren made the same switch weeks later.

Leicester boss Rodgers, who brought Lallana to Liverpool, has repeatedly hailed the attacking midfielder of late.

He said last month: "Adam is a fantastic player and one I brought into Liverpool. I have been aware of his talents since he was a young player at Southampton.

"He has done brilliantly [at Liverpool] and I'm sure he will be weighing up his options.

"But I don't need to speak about that now. We've spoken about that all through January. I don't need to speak about the summer transfer window.

"I would only add he is a top-class player."

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol is however convinced that Lallana will remain at the club.

He told ESPN FC: “As a player you want to play but I think he seems to me he’s in a stage where ‘I like being at Liverpool, I enjoy being at Liverpool, it’s a great place to be, I’m playing some games, I’m having fun. Do I want to leave Liverpool and go somewhere just to play, where it could be hard work and not enjoyable?’.

“So I don’t think this guy’s going to leave and it’s good for Liverpool that he doesn’t leave because he’s a great squad player.

“I don’t think he’s going anywhere.”
