Sunderland held to a goalless draw by Bolton

Sunderland made no progress in their bid to close the gap to the League One play-off places after being held to a goalless draw by bottom club Bolton as fans turned on manager Phil Parkinson.

Bolton, who continue to fight at the foot of the table having been docked points this season, have now lost just two of their last six matches.

And the Trotters’ latest encouraging display piled on the misery for struggling Sunderland.

The Black Cats were unable to make the sort of mark required to appease the frustrated fans at the Stadium of Light.

The nearest under-fire Parkinson came to improving his poor record was when Chris Maguire’s free-kick 10 minutes from time was turned away by Remi Matthews, who then made an even better stop to deny Marc McNulty.

Otherwise it was Bolton who had the best chances.

Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin denied Ronan Darcy twice in the first half and kept out Black Cats old boy Daryl Murphy after the restart.
