Newport win to set up Maldon and Tiptree tie

Newport will play minnows Maldon and Tiptree in the second round of the FA Cup after they secured a 2-0 win over Sky Bet League Two rivals Grimsby at Rodney Parade.
Padraig Amond’s 50th-minute strike – his eighth goal in as many FA Cup games – put the Exiles in control and they are now just one win away from another potentially money-spinning third round tie.
Michael Flynn’s side have beaten Leicester, held Tottenham and gone head-to-head with Manchester City in this competition in the last two seasons.
And Amond ensured his and Newport’s FA Cup love affair continues, with captain Joss Labadie grabbing a second late on.
Grimsby were the better side in an awful first half. The only action of note saw Mariners winger Jordan Cook send a header against the crossbar after he was flagged offside.
Newport defender Ryan Inniss headed a tame effort on goal, but that was as good as it got for Flynn.
The start of the second half was delayed with referee Darren Handley concerned about a drone flying over Rodney Parade, but when the action started Amond finally gave the game lift off.
Corey Whitely led a Newport breakaway and with Grimsby all at sea, he squared the ball across goal where the lethal Amond slotted home.
There was still time for Grimsby defender Mattie Pollock to receive his marching orders for a second yellow card and Labadie wrapped it up with his strike going in off the bar.
