Emotional David De Gea Slams Manchester United's Season After 1-0 Defeat To Newcastle

David de Gea believes that Manchester United are going through their toughest period and admitted that he doesn't "know what is happening."

The Red Devils are two points above the relegation zone after Newcastle claimed a 1-0 victory at St James' Park on Sunday.

And an emotional De Gea, who penned a long-term deal with the club last month, was lost for words and said that this is "probably the most difficult time since I've been here."

The 28-year-old Spaniard told Sky Sports after the match: "We didn't create any proper chances. We defended well. The team needs to step up.

"We have some big injuries, but that's no excuse.

"We are Manchester United, we need to keep training hard, fighting and winning games."

When he was asked what United needed to improve this season, De Gea responded: "Everything"

He continued: "A lot of things to improve. I don't know what to say.

"Keep trying, fighting, improving every day. It's a hard moment for us.

"The most difficult time since I've been here. I don't know why, what is happening.

"Sorry to the fans. We will keep fighting.

"Come on, we conceded a goal from a corner. That cannot happen. It's unacceptable.

"Not just this game, but the whole season has not been good."

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been under intense pressure, said that he was "disappointed" and insisted that there was no "excuse" for the result.

He continued: "The players worked hard and ran their socks off, but at the moment we're in a place we're not used to.

"Some of the boys lack a little bit of composure and we don't create enough chances to win a game of football.

"They stay together as a team but we don't create."

Matthew Longstaff's second-half strike from outside of the box secured an important three points for Steve Bruce's men.

And the 19-year-old midfielder received the Man of the Match award from brother Sean, who was heavily linked with a move to United in the summer.
